The UGBS Innovation and Incubation Hub served as the implementing body for the maiden edition of the Energy & Related Industries Innovation Convergence Challenge (Ennoverge Challenge), which took place from November 18 to December 15, 2023. The Ennoverge Challenge was initiated by PConverge, who identified the need to bridge the gap between academia and industry within the energy and related sectors.
The Challenge, supported by industry partners Datrix Tech Solution and Chemsolv Company Limited, fostered a mutual relationship wherein students provided analytical solutions to pressing industry issues, while industries, in turn, offered students internship placements—both virtual and in-person.
Following a structured approach, the Ennoverge Challenge began with a virtual launch after shortlisting 23 candidates from an initial pool of 30 applicants following the call for applications from September to October 2023. The Official Launch, which outlined the expectations of the industry partners, was honored by the Dean of UGBS, who served as the special guest speaker.
Through comprehensive training and webinars, the selected students gained a deeper understanding of the Ennoverge Challenge. The virtual and in-person training held was focused on Design Thinking and Pitch DNA practices. The UGBS Innovation and Incubation Hub hosted a virtual check-in webinar where industry representatives engaged with participants, addressed their concerns, and provided guidance. Additionally, Datrix Tech Solutions held an in-person session with their selected participants, offering detailed insights into their operations and requirements.
An in-person pitch competition was held at the UGBS Innovation and Incubation Hub on 15th December 2023 following the training and industry engagements. Out of 10 students who presented their solutions to a panel of judges, industry leaders, and UG students, 5 participants emerged as winners. Adarkwa Kwabena Yeboah and Clement Barffo secured internships at Datrix Tech Solutions while Prince Kwame Turkson Mensah, Michael Odartey Lamptey, and Hawa Hussein-Yussif were awarded internships at Chemsolv Company Limited. The interns benefitted from various training, collaboration and teamwork opportunities as well as professional development and networking opportunities.
The feedback of students about the Ennoverge Challenge was positive. They appreciated the opportunity to contribute to industry projects and suggested improvements such as better accommodation during internships and additional training in branding and public speaking. They also recommended expanding the program's publicity to attract more participants. Industry partners, Datrix Tech Solutions and Chemsolv Company Limited, praised the collaboration between academia and industry. While Datrix was satisfied with the organization, Chemsolv highlighted logistical improvements and the need for more diverse participants. Both companies expressed interest in continuing their involvement to foster innovation in Ghanaian industries.
Overall, the Ennoverge Challenge effectively connected students with industry professionals, fostering collaboration, innovation, and skill development. The initiative underscores the importance of partnerships between education and industry, providing students with valuable practical experiences to shape their careers.
